写真は、札幌市民ギャラリーにて、２０２２年５月開催の「第２４回札幌愛石会展示会」に出品した「水石」の飾り（作品）です。私の展示会出品で初めての小品の水石の飾りとなりました。こう写真で見返してみると、反省する点も多いです。会場にてベテラン水石家の方から、アドバイスを受けました。それは２点ありました。 ひとつは、飾りに「物語」があるか、ということでした。それを指摘されると痛かったです。飾りとはただ石を並べることではありません。そこに、何らかの物語、風景を感じさせることが大切なのです。水石とは、石から自然のイメージを喚起させなければいけません。小さな石を並べた時、そこに何らかのコンセプトがないといけない、ということです。今回私の飾りは、見た目の「整合性」に気をとられ「物語」（風景）まで気がまわらなかったといえます。 次に、「余白の美」を考える、ということ。具体的には石の数が多すぎるののではないか、という指摘です。石の数は多ければ良い、ということではありません。大きな石の場合は、展示の場合ひとつしか使いません。ちいさな水石の場合は、その数の制限はありませんが、
そこに美があるか、いうことです。 飾りに余白（空間）があれば、そこに見やすさと、落ち着いた美が生まれると思いますし、そこに先のアドバイスの「物語」を感じさせる「行間」となります。その点、今回の展示は欲張って石を並べてしまい、余白の美はなかったなーと反省する次第。 展示会は、ベテランの方からアドバイスをいただける大変よい機会だとも言えます。 あと、私自身の反省点は、掛け軸なり、の背面を飾るものがあっても良かったなと思いました。 水石の世界はどこまでも深いです。次の展示会を頑張りたいと思います。
石川伸一 The photo shows a suiseki decoration (work) I exhibited at the 24th Sapporo Aisekikai Exhibition held in May 2022 at the Sapporo Civic Gallery. It was the first small suiseki decoration I exhibited at the exhibition. Looking back at the photos, I have many things to reflect on. I received advice from a veteran suiseki artist at the exhibition. There were two points.
One was whether or not there was a "story" behind the decorations. It was painful to have that pointed out. Decoration is not just putting stones in a row. It is important to make people feel some kind of story or scenery. Suiseki must evoke an image of nature from the stones. When you put small stones together, there must be some kind of concept behind it. In this case, I was so concerned with the "consistency" of the appearance of my decorations that I did not pay attention to the "story" (landscape).
Secondly, I should think about the "beauty of the margins". Specifically, I pointed out that the number of stones may be too many. More stones is not always better. In the case of large stones, only one stone is used for the exhibition. In the case of small stones, there is no limit to the number of stones.
The question is whether there is beauty in it or not.
If there is a blank space (space) in the decoration, it will be easy to look at, and it will create a calm beauty, and it will be a "line space" that makes us feel the "story" of the previous advice. In this respect, I regret that I was greedy in arranging the stones in this exhibition and there was no beauty in the margins.
I can say that an exhibition is a very good opportunity to receive advice from veterans.
I also regretted that I had not had a hanging scroll or something to decorate the back of the stone.
The world of suiseki is endlessly deep. I will do my best for the next exhibition.
